About Margo
Margo Fowkes (pronounced “Folks”) is the founder and president of OnTarget Consulting Inc., a firm specializing in helping organizations and individuals act strategically, improve performance and achieve their business goals. Margo works with clients to solve problems of productivity, morale and innovation. Author of Leading Through Loss: How To Navigate Grief At Work, Margo also coaches leaders on how to create a more compassionate culture by acknowledging and speaking openly about grief and loss in the workplace.
Before founding her own consulting firm in 1994, Margo held positions in the private, public and nonprofit sectors. A former budget analyst for the United States Budget Committee, she has worked for all levels of government – federal, state and local. She has also worked with a range of businesses from Fortune 500 companies to sole proprietorships.
Margo’s clients come from all three sectors – private, public and nonprofit. They include SMA America, NEC Electronics, the Girl Scouts, Intermountain Healthcare and the California Department of Aging.
Active in community service, Margo has served on several nonprofit boards as well as founded and run her own nonprofit. During her tenure as an instructor at the Nonprofit Resource Center in Sacramento, Margo provided training through the BOARDLINK™ program.
In addition to her consulting work, Margo delivers a variety of workshops and keynote presentations. Her most sought-after programs include From Coping to Conquering: Overcoming Negativity in the Workplace, Teaming Toward Tomorrow: Building a High Performance Team, Working Through Grief and When Conflict Strikes: Preserving the Relationship and Getting What You Want.
Following the death of her son Jimmy in 2014 after an eight-year battle with brain cancer, Margo launched Salt Water, an online community that provides a safe harbor for those who have lost someone dear to them – a child, parent, spouse, sibling, close friend or pet. Inspired by Jimmy’s determination to live a rich, full life despite his circumstances, the blog posts and resources focus on healing and building a new life in the aftermath of a devastating loss.
A graduate of Stanford University, Margo received a Master’s of Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Part of Margo’s unique approach can be credited to her most perceptive critic – her father who, until his death at the age of 102½, provided thoughtful counsel on her consulting practice and ran the best clipping service around.
